The worldwide innovation landscape offers a competitive basis from which to develop novel solutions that will help to achieve the international climate goals. Since numerous research projects for deploying new green technologies are already well underway, we want to showcase how we are already working on the next step! To this end, and as part of the NEFI Technology Talks, national (Austrian) and international industrial endeavours – in the context of selected decarbonisation topics – will be brought together in the one online event to synthese findings and to identify synergies to exploit and drive development further.
Avoiding greenwashing, providing guidance to investors – and ultimately financing the green transformation of the economy – is the goal the EU is pursuing with the Green Deal. The EU taxonomy is intended to set the framework for defining “green” economic activities by translating the EU’s six comprehensive climate and environmental goals into a catalogue of criteria. Large public interest companies with more than 500 employees will be required to disclose the extent to which they comply with the taxonomy criteria as early as 2022 for the year 2021. The set of rules will be gradually expanded and is soon to be applicable to SMEs as well. The European Union wants to become the world’s first climate-neutral economy by 2050. To achieve this, large sums of money must be invested and the economic system must be transformed. The “EU Action Plan for Sustainable Finance” is intended to help channel funding and investor money into sustainable projects and sustainable industries. It has two main components: the taxonomy and the disclosure regulation. The EU taxonomy defines which economic activities are considered environmentally sustainable.
The Disclosure Regulation, in turn, obliges financial market actors to provide transparent information on the extent to which they take sustainability aspects into account. The regulations have been in force since January 2022.
In the NEFI Technology Talk “EU Taxonomy”, we want to shed light on the potential of the EU Taxonomy as a driver of decarbonisation in industry and its impact on NEFI projects.
